FAQ

Everything we'd tell you across a kitchen table.

The balm

What exactly is in it?

Five things: 100% grass-fed and grass-finished beef tallow, organic raw honey, organic beeswax, cold-pressed organic olive oil, and a 100% pure essential oil blend of sandalwood, neroli, Scots pine and rose. No water, no synthetic fragrance, no petroleum, no seed oils, no preservatives. Beeswax and honey keep it stable for twelve months on their own.

Which essential oils are in it?

Sandalwood, neroli, Scots pine and rose, in a small amount for scent. They are pure plant oils, not a synthetic perfume. If your skin is very reactive, patch-test on the inside of your wrist for 24 hours before using it on your face.

Does it smell like beef?

No. It smells lightly of sandalwood, neroli, pine and rose from the essential oils, and the scent settles within minutes of absorbing. Meat-smelling tallow balms come from badly rendered fat. Ours is rendered and filtered in small batches.

How long does it take to absorb?

One to two minutes if you warm a pea-sized amount between your fingers first and press rather than rub. Straight from the jar and applied thick, it can take longer. That's a water-free balm doing its job, not a defect.

How long does a jar last?

Two to four months used morning and night on the face. Six to eight weeks if you're also doing hands, elbows and heels every day.

Why does my jar look different from the last one?

Because nothing in it is standardized in a lab. Tallow and honey vary a little by season and batch, so color, grain and firmness can shift slightly. If it's ever grainy, warm it in your hands or set the jar in warm water for a minute. It works exactly the same.

Will it melt in summer?

It softens above about 85°F. Keep it out of the car and off the windowsill. If it melts, let it set at room temperature; it's unchanged.

Can I use it under makeup?

Yes, and many people prefer it as a base. Use a small amount, give it two minutes, then apply foundation. It stops makeup settling into dry lines.

Your skin

Who is it for?

Dry, tight, flaky, crepey, mature, windburned and irritated skin. Cracked hands and heels. Skin that stopped tolerating actives and retinoids. Eczema-prone skin on the days between flares, alongside your treatment.

Who is it not for?

Oily or acne-prone skin: tallow is a rich fat and can clog pores that are already congested. Skin prone to perioral dermatitis. Open, cracked-and-bleeding or weeping skin. Skin that you know reacts to essential oils. We turn these customers away on purpose.

Will it clog my pores?

Unlikely on dry, normal or mature skin. Likely enough on oily or acne-prone skin that we don't recommend it there. If you're unsure, patch-test on the jawline for a week before using it across the whole face.

Can I use it on eczema or psoriasis?

It's a moisturizer, not a treatment, and it isn't a replacement for anything your doctor prescribed. Many people with eczema-prone skin use it between flares because it has no water, alcohol or synthetic fragrance. It does contain a small amount of essential oils, so patch-test first, avoid broken skin, and ask your doctor if your skin is currently open.

Is it safe for children and babies?

For dry patches on children from about three years old, yes, after a 24-hour patch test on the inside of the arm. We don't recommend it for babies because the blend contains essential oils. The honey warning you may know is about eating honey under twelve months of age; it doesn't apply to skin. If your child has eczema, ask your pediatrician before using any food-derived balm on broken skin.

I'm allergic to bees or beeswax.

Then skip this one. Beeswax and honey are both in it, and we'd rather lose the sale than cause a reaction.

Does it sting?

Rarely. There's no alcohol, no synthetic fragrance and no acids in it. It does contain a small amount of essential oils, so on freshly cracked skin you may feel it for a moment as it seals. If it stings and keeps stinging, stop and email us.
