The story my face was telling

In September I sat in my driveway with Ava's drawing in my purse. I had read GREAT-GRANDMA under a face full of crayon lines.

I cried in the car, then flipped the phone camera onto my own neck. It was crumpled like tissue paper, and the dry lines showed in the glass. Ava had put me in my own mother's place, a whole generation early.
